Project summary

EuroWilson was initially funded through the EU Framework Programme 6 from 2004-2008. The overall aim of EW was to assess the feasibility of mounting randomised controlled trials of treatment in WD. This was achieved by establishing a clinical database of newly presenting cases of WD and gathering data on the incidence of WD, and the numbers of patients within clinically homogenous groups.

EW's initial purpose is achieved, but in doing so we have established a rich data resource. This is giving data about epidemiology, quality, and current choice of treatments. Follow-up of this uniquely well-documented cohort will give information about outcomes from different treatment regimes, late neurological deterioration, neurological outcome after transplantation, and other current long-term concerns.
